Release the Power button when the progress bar completes and disappears. Don't perform a hard reset unless you have backed up your data, or you are willing to lose everything. EDIT: I also find that keeping the phone *cool* and *vibration free* helps prevent the issue. If this does not resolve the issue, try using the physical mute button on the phone. Check to make sure it is relatively close to your mouth and that you speak up to help the other person hear you. If the previous procedure does not work try a soft reset. And then its stops working.

I hadn't suspected the heat from the touchstone, but that seems a reasonable thought. With a little practice you can do this with your spare hand in about 2 seconds. I think it's a software or firmware problem, and not a screen/hardware problem... Let me know if it works for you.
